Professor Joseph E IBRAHIM

MBBS, GradCHE, PhD FAFPHM, FRACP

Joseph is a Professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Monash University, Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine where he is head of the Health Law and Ageing Research Unit, an Adjunct Professor at Australian Centre for Evidence Based Aged Care, LaTrobe University, and a practising senior consultant specialist in geriatric medicine with over 30 years experience.  Joseph’s ongoing research is investigating approaches to reducing harm to older persons living in Residential Aged Care Services, improving quality of life and ensuring proper clinical and medical care standards are maintained and practiced. Joseph is also a producer, co-writer and narrator of three short films about ethical issues facing health professionals when providing care for persons with dementia and ageing including Dignity of Risk (2017), Not for resuscitation and dementia (2015) and,  Driving and dementia (2013). 

Dr Anna Miles

PhD, Speech Pathologist, The University of Auckland, New Zealand

Dr Anna Miles is a practising speech-language therapist with 20 years of experience working in the acute and community setting. Anna is a senior lecturer at The University of Auckland. She is a researcher, lecturer and clinician in the area of voice and swallowing disorders. Anna runs a hospital-based student teaching clinic as well as an outpatient voice and swallowing rehabilitation clinic. She is the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association Clinical Expert in Adult Dysphagia. 


The Swallowing Research Laboratory in the Centre of Brain Research at The University of Auckland, led by Dr Miles, strives to improve the lives of people with swallowing difficulties through improved assessment, treatment and medical education. The laboratory hopes to reduce the risks of pneumonia and death associated with swallowing difficulties as well as improve the quality of life of suffers.

Dr Michelle Bennett

Speech Pathologist

Dr Michelle Bennett is a speech pathologist and researcher with current research focus on facilitating independence and choice for older people within consumer-directed models of care. Michelle is a strong advocate of the right of older people to continue to be independent in their decisions and to be supported to participate in meaningful life activities. Michelle has a long history of representation of speech pathology and allied health on government sector reference groups with an ongoing interest in the influence of policy on clinical care and consumer well-being.

Michelle Cimoli

Speech pathologist, CPSP, PhD Candidate

Michelle Cimoli is a speech pathologist with over 20 years of experience working in the area of dysphagia. She has worked in a range of clinical settings in Australia and UK. She currently works part-time at Austin Health in the radiation oncology setting. She also leads the FEES training program at Austin Health.  


Michelle was one of the early-adopters of FEES in Australia. She was involved in establishing FEES at Austin Health where FEES has been part of clinical practice since 2004. She has studied the use of FEES in USA, UK and Singapore while engaged in two travelling fellowships. She has led state-based and national projects to establish FEES practice and training guidelines.


Michelle is a PhD candidate at La Trobe University. Her project is focused on developing and evaluating a FEES assessment tool.

Dr Amanda Richards

MBBS (Hons), FRACS
Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon

Dr Amanda Richards is an Australian ear, nose and throat surgeon with dual fellowship training both laryngology and head and neck oncologic surgery. Along with her private voice, swallow and airway practice at Pinnacle Surgery, Amanda leads the Laryngology service at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Amanda is the recent past president of the Australian Voice Association and a current board member of the Laryngology Society of Australasia.

Dr Gustavo Knoffs

Otolaryngologist

Gustavo has worked for nine years as an Otolaryngologist Surgeon and lecturer in Brazil with focus in laryngology (voice and swallowing). He was responsible for training ENT residents in laryngology at two universities. He also routinely conducted home and facility-based FESS assessments through his private practice.  He is currently studying the interactions between voice, speech and neurodegeneration as a PhD student at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Speech Pathologist, PhD candidate

Olga Birchall is a speech pathologist with a passion for informed decision making and equity in service delivery.

​

She graduated from La Trobe university with first class honours in 2000. Over the past 19 years she has worked in multiple acute teaching hospitals in Australia and the UK with diverse clinical caseloads, published in academic journals, and participated in an award winning Speech Pathology Australia media campaign. Olga runs a successful mobile Speech Pathology practice servicing residential aged care homes and acute hospitals. The mix of skills acquired through managing diverse clinical caseloads across the continuum of care has ignited Olga’s passion to explore creative solutions for improved dysphagia care in older adults. Currently, she is undertaking PhD studies on a scholarship through the University of Melbourne examining instrumental swallowing assessment in adults in residential aged care homes.
